Bill Frieder is a former American college basketball coach, best known for his tenure as the head coach of the University of Michigan Wolverines from 1980 to 1989. Prior to his time at Michigan, Frieder also served as the head coach at the University of Michigan at Flint, where he coached for four seasons.
During his time at Michigan, Frieder led the Wolverines to three Big Ten Championships and four NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the national championship game in 1989. He was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year three times and was also named the National Coach of the Year by the UPI in 1985.
After leaving Michigan in 1989, Frieder went on to coach at Arizona State University from 1989 to 1997. He also had a brief stint as the head coach of the NBA's Detroit Pistons in 1990.
Frieder currently works as an analyst for various basketball programs and is a regular contributor to ESPN's College Basketball coverage. He is considered one of the most successful college basketball coaches in Michigan's history.
